Driving Controls and DevicesFor those in the disabled community who have limited lower mobility and are interested in driving mobility equipped vehicle, the answer is hand controls. These systems are designed to allow a driver to manipulate the brake and gas pedals using specially designed levers and rods that typically gets mounted below the steering wheel.
The hand control systems that we install are designed to have the highest levels of user-friendliness, ease of operation, and safety. They also do not interfere with standard driving. No adjustment of the system is required to allow for standard drivers to be able to operate the vehicle.
The primary way in which hand control systems differ is in how the lever is designed to perform the various driving functions. Before you decide on a particular hand control system, make sure that it's operation fits your mobility needs, and have a driving evaluation done. Below are the most popular types and styles we offer.
Push/right angle style
Our Most Popular Style Hand Control
Push the handle upward toward the instrument panel to brake and pull it downward at a right angle to accelerate. Persons with limited finger dexterity can operate this type of mechanical hand control. This can be setup for right or left handed use. Push/pull style
Hand Control
Push forward on the handle to brake and pull it backwards to accelerate. Persons with limited finger dexterity can operate this type of mechanical hand control. In addition, a three-post hand interface can be installed to allow the user to maintain contact with the handle. This can be setup for right or left handed use. Push/rock style
Hand Control
Push the handle forward to brake and rock it back to accelerate. Persons with no finger dexterity can operate this type of hand control. This can be setup for right or left handed use. Push/rotate style
Hand Control
Push the handle forward to brake and twist it to accelerate. Full or limited finger function is required to operate this control. This can be setup for right or left handed use. Hand Brake Only Option
Hand Control
The brake only control is available for persons with sufficient foot motion and strength to operate the accelerator but not the brake. Should an accelerator control become necessary, the needed components can be added to the existing control. This can be setup for right or left handed use. Push/rotate style
Hand Control
Push the handle forward to brake and twist it to accelerate. Full or limited finger function is required to operate this control. Notice the thumb rod to assist in twisting the accelerator without having to tightly grip the control. This can be setup for right or left handed use. Steering Devices
Tripin, Spinner Knob, Quad Fork, Amputee Ring
For positive one hand control of the steering wheel. The spinner knob remains in a fixed position via two support straps stemming from a fixed base which is attached to the steering wheel. Our most popular steering control, the ball-grip presses firmly against the palm of your hand, giving you added strength and control for easy driving. For instance, your installer can choose the handle angle to suit your preference. The base's position along the inside of the steering wheel is adjustable according to the individual's abilities. The amputee ring accommodates most drivers with a prosthetic hook on their steering arm(s) (typical with two fingers). One finger goes on the outside of the ring, the other finger fits on the inside, securing you to the steering wheel for smooth handling. The Tri-Pin steering device is for drivers with no grip and/or diminished wrist stability. The tri-pin is firmly supported by a secured base located along the inside of the steering wheel. Each pin is covered with foam to provide the driver with maximum comfort and the foam is easily replaceable. Your hand and wrist are comfortably secure with this lightweight three-pin grip. The pins are fully adjustable, so you can easily find your individual comfort setting. The quad fork steering device is for drivers with minimum grip, stabilizes the driving hand securely. Secured base is also adjustable according to individual abilities. With the cover dual forks wrapped provide backhand support, your hand stays securely and comfortable in place. 3545 Foot Control Left Foot Accelerator
Meets or exceeds VA specifications. Our Left Foot Accelerator is easily installed and easy to remove for other drivers. It allows you to use your left foot to accelerate, while the pedal guard protects the right accelerator.
3570 Accelerator Guard
Meets or exceeds VA specifications. This product protects you from inadvertently resting your foot on the accelerator. It installs quickly and easily and it mounts on the same base bracket as the left foot accelerator pedal. It's also detachable, so other drivers can use your vehicle. It is recommended for use with hand controls.
3571 Accelerator/Brake Guard
Meets or exceeds VA specifications. This control prevents the driver from inadvertently pressing the accelerator or brake pedal or placing a foot underneath either pedal.
3572 Accelerator/Brake Guard Lowered Floor
Meets or exceeds VA specifications. This control prevents the driver from inadvertently pressing the accelerator or brake pedal or placing a foot underneath either pedal. Used in lowered floor minivans.
